WHEN I return from war,
will earth receive me here
along these quiet paths once more
and bend its silent will before
my weary feet—which turn in fear
at the frightened whirr of quail's wings?
Will the tiny wren that sings
within the locust-drink again
from my garden fountain
of a summer afternoon,
or have I come too soon, 0 God—too soon?
